Brendan,

I don't know what is causing this but if it is all of a sudden and you 
have not done any updates I would look at hardware. It could be your card. 
Rule out the disk by running badblocks although this seems unlikely. Could 
heat be an issue?

If you go the last route that guide is pretty damn good (except fot the 
myth setup bits). I have done it twice now over last few days so at least 
you will have someone to shout at! Before you do it check all your 
hardware though so you won't have to be fighting with it at 3 AM to get it 
going!
