a: are you using Firewire? If not, you might as well not load
that module, anyway ;)
b: I suspect bad RAM or cooling; take the machine apart and ensure
there's no dust buildup, reseat the RAM, maybe run it with the top
off for a while and do a memtest+ run.
I'd definitely try to figure out what's up there *before* reformatting,
or starting the software side from scratch, otherwise you'll be trying
to figure out if it's hardware or software that's causing setup
issues.
