Interestingly enough, last night I commented out

    alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394

and it didn't seem to help, but maybe I was in a fog.  I went in now and 
did it again, did a reboot, and (from my terminal window logged in via 
ssh) it appears to be back up.  I'll learn soon from My Darling whether 
it's actually up and functioning in a usable fashion.

Both you and Damian are right---heat is a good candidate.  I'll do a 
cursory vaccum and memtest and see how things look.

I think I've subconscously wanted to do a new setup from scratch for a 
while, and have seen this as my opportunity. ;)  All in good time...
