[myth-ie] new install today after three years

I feel you pain Brendan. These types of problems can be nightmare to
resolve.

Just a suggestion but would you consider using Mythbuntu? It's based on
Ubuntu 7.10 and might help get you around some the problems you're having. I
installed it recently (
http://www.17od.com/2007/10/26/installing-mythbuntu-710/) and found it quite
straight forward.
