Besides using the wrong variable deferencing scheme for accessing the title in 
the example I posted formerly, I tracked down the actual problem why meta
data can't be loaded vie the 'metatable' attribute in a 'contents' tag.

The attached example demonstrates, at least at my system, that the 
metadata is read correctly if the 'format' attribute is left out. But if it is
included with 'format="text/et"' the metadata isn't read any longer.

I tried to fix this in the code but couldn't find the place where the format
conversion is called.

Please Help.
