[WM] Auto generating "up" metadata

I have a directory structure that is like the structure of my site

e.g.:
/
  index.txt
/programming
  index.txt
  style.txt

I would like to automatically generate the "up" metadata for each page.
How can I do that? I tried to use the <{set}> directive but I don't know how to strip the last part of my page's name to obtain only the first one (that is: I would like to obtain programming from programming/style, foo/bar from foo/bar/bar1). Is it possible using the set directive?
